Association takes on full funding of Pelican Lake hazard buoys

Committee:

At the Annual Membership Meeting on 6 June 2026, members approved the creation of a restricted buoy fund, capped at $30,000, to carry the full cost of hazard marking buoys on Pelican Lake.

Hazard buoys have been funded by the Towns of Schoepke and Enterprise since the 1970s, with the association covering maintenance and replacement. Enterprise removed buoy funding from its 2025 budget, and the town board has been clear that buoys are not a service Wisconsin law requires it to provide. Schoepke passed a resolution in 2025 to continue funding buoys within its jurisdiction through the 2026–2027 budget cycle.

Buoy services cost the association $8,060 in 2025. The restricted fund is being built from raffle proceeds, a charitable trust contribution with matching funds, and memorial gifts made in 2025 in response to the funding shortfall.

Marked hazards reduce damaged lower units and personal injuries, and both town boards have identified return tourism as the reason the marking program matters beyond the lake itself.
